6 Upper Body Exercises for Runners

Now that training and running races are behind me for the year, it’s time to focus on building (and rebuilding) a strong foundation. One area that I plan to focus on is strength training. Yes, I will continue to work on building strong hips and glutes, but I also want to pay attention to upper body strength too.

But what are the best upper body exercises for runners?

Thank goodness for friends who are personal trainers. I’ve asked my friend Carly from Fine Fit Day to help out. As a runner herself, Carly is an incredible resource. She’s pulled together her favorite 6 upper body exercises for runners.

Backed by Science, This Workout Will Get You Fit in 7 Minutes

You're busy, and the American College of Sports Medicine knows this, so it created a seven-minute, high-intensity workout for you to squeeze as much sweat as you can out of a short exercise session. To truly reap the benefits of this fitness quickie, the ACSM recommends doing three reps of the workout. Get prepped with a mat and chair, since there are some step-ups coming your way. Press play and follow along as we lead you through the 12 moves.

HIIT Workout Calendar

Why workout for an hour when you can accomplish your goals in less than half the time? If you’re not familiar with High Intensity Interval Training, you may have been missing out. HIIT routines combine the muscular benefits of weightlifting with the cardio benefits of endurance exercises such as running or spinning. The end result is a workout which makes you stronger but also leaves your metabolism on overdrive, allowing you to burn fat throughout the day.

5 Simple Daily Yoga Exercises For Good Health

The body is your temple. Keep it pure and clean for the soul to reside in ” – B.K.S. Iyengar, Yoga: the path to Holistic Health.

Deep down, we all want to practice Yoga and be fit, but somehow don’t follow through on this giving excuses like “We don’t have the time” or “We don’t wish to waste our money”.

But have you given a thought as to how beautiful and stress free you will be outside, when you take care from the inside?

In today’s stressful and hectic life, people are always on the go, leading to a state where the body, mind and soul take a thorough beating. To combat these unbearable side effects of today’s luxuries, people are turning back to the age old mantra of exercise called Yoga.

7 slimming pool exercises

Exercising in the pool is a great way to cool off and get a great workout without so much negative impact on bones and joints. Check out these great moves to get you started!

Stand in chest-deep water, holding onto the edge of the pool with your hands. Lift your body up so you are floating horizontally, still holding to the wall. Create waves by initiating a body roll movement, starting in your abdomen, then moving through your hips and down your legs. Legs and feet stay together (as if you were a mermaid). Repeat the movement rapidly, creating waves for at least 30 seconds.

12 Workout Moves For Firm Thighs

Your thighs are just one of the many parts of the body that you probably want to shape up. Yup, I’m sure you want them to look sexier and or just simply to be able to wear the right size pants. Let’s face it, the pants available at your popular clothing line aren’t really tailored for people with thick thighs. While those who lift weights often get their pants customized for them, and don’t mind this minor inconvenience at all, there are still a lot of women today who would rather just buy and wear without having to worry about the cloth ripping in two.

4 Great Stretches to Increase Your Flexibility

  • I did dance AND gymnastics growing up, but honestly, I’m as stiff as a board when it comes to flexibility. I can’t even touch my toes. Seriously. Well, maybe I can for just a second but it sends shooting pain from to toes up through my back. Stretching may seem overwhelming, so here are some good basic ones to start with:

5 Minute Body Weight Workout

Body weight is often all you need to get the job done. With the right routines, body weight exercise can bring out that deep rooted strength that lies in all of us. No weights, bars, or bands required. All legs, arms, feet, and hands.

This 5-minute routine will target your arms, legs and abs mainly, but the dynamic movements involved will strengthen so many more muscles. Keep pushing through these 5 minutes from beginning to end. You can easily squeeze this routine in any time of day, and with just 5 minutes for a full body routine, there are no reasons why you don’t have time to workout today.

Get this awesome Hip Blaster Workout

When thinking about strengthening your hips, I usually think of them as 4 walls holding up your core: the front, two sides, and the back. It’s important that you train all of these to maximize strength; the thing is that’s also the way to sculpt, tone and tighten the midline curves. Here are 5 of my favorite moves to get you noticed in your swimsuit, your skinny jeans, that new skirt, etc, etc, etc…

Don't let bad fitness habits stop your progress

A lot of people who work out at the gym have bad habits even they themselves have no clue they’re bad. They would go about their fitness training program everyday just to find out they’re not making any strides.

These habits are not only bad habits, but they’re also bad choices that could affect long-term health. If you’re guilty of any one of these, it’s time to make a change.

1. Working Out on an Empty Stomach

The old theory used to be that you should train on an empty stomach in order to burn more fat. There are conflicting studies on whether this is true, but I’m in the camp that believes you should give your body fuel before you push it to the max.

11 Awesome Arm Toning Workouts

Get ready to look amazing in dresses, tank tops, and swimsuits. These 11 awesome arm toning workouts will leave your arms stronger and more defined. You’ll definitely feel the burn once you’re done.

1. Workday Arms Challenge

How To Build A Better Butt

Butt, backside, buns, bum, booty—whatever you call it—you probably want a better one. Everybody does! Firm, round, and lifted are highly desired derriere traits. But let’s put how to look perkier in jeans out of our heads for a second and talk a little science. The suspense!
Did you know your butt is home to the biggest muscle in your entire body? The gluteus maximus, and it’s a glorious thing! This muscle is involved in everything from cycling to walking to climbing stairs to standing! If your glutes aren’t strong, our entire lower body alignment can get out of whack and cause shin splints, runner’s knee, and Achilles tendinitis. And when the gluteus maximus is too weak to do it’s job, other less capable muscles like the hamstrings, low back, quads, and calves have to do extra work which can increase the risk of injury. A strong gluteus maximus means a stronger and more active you!

Yoga for Hamstrings: Hamstring Stretches

Many of us have very tight hamstrings. For athletes, especially runners, the hamstrings get tight as they’re used during workouts. Hamstrings can also tighten up from sitting all day, which many people do in this technology-oriented world. Doing some yoga for hamstrings poses can help you loosen the hamstrings, allowing better range of motion and comfort. For you yogis, flexible hamstrings will also let you work on more advanced poses like hanumanasana (splits). To help you lengthen your hamstrings, I’ve compiled my favorite hamstring stretches. In all of these poses, be sure to engage your quads so you don’t lock and/or hyperextend your knees. For all hamstring stretches, be sure you’re feeling a nice, comfortable stretch in the belly of the muscle, its widest part.

The best 10-minute ab workout for busy moms

27 No-Equipment Exercises You Can Do At Home

We’ve all heard people say they can’t work out because they don’t have time to go to the gym or they don’t have any equipment. Well, no more excuses! You can get a full-body workout doing bodyweight exercises—no equipment required. “Squats, push-ups, and other moves that use only your own weight for resistance can be done anywhere and provide a great workout in a small amount of space,” says Michelle Mason, ACE-certified personal trainer at Uplift Studios in New York City.

3 Moves That Target Saddlebags

It's true: if you're worried about getting rid of saddlebags — that fleshy part around your hips and where your thighs and butt meet — the answer isn't entirely in the gym. Both genetics and diet play a part in whether or not you're blessed with them; luckily, there are ways to work your lower body that, when paired with a healthy diet, can help reduce the size of saddlebags and sculpt strong curves. Plus, moves that target your backside help lift it up for a defined, perky posterior. Take this quick three-move workout: it may seem easy, but you'll feel the burn. Get ready to strengthen those lower-body muscles and boost your metabolism; find out how to do each move here.
